I still remember the first stage of Circuit O deTorres del Paine, the one that has passed since the Hotel Las Torres at Camp Serón. If I am honest, this first stage was not by far the prettiest, rather disappointing, since the image he had in the head of a place like Torres del Paine was not even that close. Luckily, Circuit O awaits surprises and best of all, it is a route that goes from less to more.

Arriving at the National Park

After a long preparation of the trip in Spain and a long trip by plane and bus we arrive at Torres del Paine. We leave early by taking a bus from Puerto Natales, yes, without before leave part of the luggage in the hostel Where we stayed last night. We arrived at the entrance of the National Park very early, of the first, eager to start the first stage of Circuit O.

When we arrived at Torres del Paine, we bought the entrance to the park, it came out for 18,000 pesos, an amount that will amount to 26,000 pesos in 2017 according to the park guard. Right there, next to the reception, they put a video in a room with the park rules, since every year this area of Chile is greatly affected by tourism and want to raise awareness, of course, to everyone who visits it.

The guard also told us that in 2016 there were days with more than 150 people for refuge and that many of them came with little preparation, something that caused that there was not only a collapse in the park, but that the number of rescues and problems with the walkers increased. The truth is that you think about it, and then you see a scenario as fantastic as this and the first thing that comes to mind is, how is the people! No one is informed before? As we said in the previous articles of Chile, it is necessary to prepare the trip and know what is coming. There are long routes like Circuit O and W and not everyone can do it. The truth is not difficult, but only everyone knows how far it can go.

From Torres Central Refuge to Serón Camp

From the park entrance you can start the route to Camp Serón, since about 3 km along the dirt road (where the park buses go and past a bridge), there is a road that indicates the route deviation. But if you love yourself save about 4km You can take one of the buses that go to Las Torres Hotel and start the route from there.

About to leave the twins of Viaja for free, here we go!
Circuit Output O

These buses leave you at a junction, next to the Torres Central Shelter, refuge where we will spend our last night in Torres del Paine. Here we went back to check the luggage, what things if there is no reverse once here! :), and we begin the route. The truth, if we had lacked some food we could have bought it in the shelter that was next to the crossing, but no, we took everything with us.

We begin the first stage of Circuit O by a wide dirt track outside the limits of the National Park, since the first stage takes place mainly by private land outside the National Park. The park will always be on our left, but much of this stage will be along roads and paths of "landowners" in the area.

The route ascends little by little, with little difficulty and very little unevenness. The landscape cannot be said to be what we expected, in fact it reminded us in part ofGredos and Guadarrama in Spain, but deep down we knew that Circuit O is a route from less to more, a route that ends in the true treasure of the park , he Viewpoint of the Horns.

After a few kilometers we leave the wide track to go to a narrow path, where sometimes we found some hiker and riders with their respective horses. Being the first stage, the people you will see will become not only known, but also in fellow travelers.

As it progresses, the Paine river, just to the right of the National Park. In addition, the vegetation begins to change and large bushes and even trees appear.

Halfway along the route, about 6km from the Torres Central Refuge, is the highest point of the stage, about 350m high, and then give way to a long descent to a very flat track next to the Paine River.

Gradually the camp was seen in the distance, almost next to the riverbank, but we decided to stop along the way to eat some sandwiches and rest, after all we started the route at 10 in the morning and we We saw in the camp at 3 pm without having to do anything.

The good thing about stopping by the road is thatyou can meet people. Some Chileans passed by, father and son, and a super nice Catalan who had been using Chile and Argentina for several months. Both we saw each other during several stages in Circuit O and the best, we met very interesting stories. That if one had lived in Norway for many years, that if other women lost him, etc ... Well, the second as everyone ... 🙂

Arriving at Serón Camp
Arriving at Serón Camp

After crossing several streams, small wood bridges and a forest full of birds appeared a long meadow with very tall grass and deep in the background, the Serón Camp. We had a little "fear" of what we were going to find, since we had read in other blogI know that the guard of this shelter was a kind of "ogre", but quite the opposite, it was not only fun if he did not behave very well with us.

Both the camp and the dome are not bad at all. They are located in a high place next to the river and although there are few services they have all the basics you might need on a route like this.
