The Oman desert par excellence is the so-called Wahiba Sands, a place where the Omani will enjoy one of their favorite sports, get the most out of their powerful all-terrain. But if you are a traveler, are you able to visit this desert for free?
Wahiba Sands for free
Only for the more adventurous
When we planned our trip to Oman, one of the places that you are sure to visit was Wahiba Sands. Although much of this country is pure desert, the most beautiful dunes and the most electrifying landscapes are undoubtedly in Wahiba Sands. We are not experts driving 4 × 4, but we are lovers of controlled risk and adventure. Enter any desert is not a game, and you have to know very well where you are going, what means you have and above all, what you are capable of doing.

Wahiba Sands safely
We went to the desert driving ourselves a Toyota Land Cruiser V6, a very suitable car for this type of adventure. Before entering the desert you have to make sure you bring enough water, food and a full tank. Any precaution is little, and if you have doubts, you better take a guide (they kick out before entering the desert) if you don't feel safe.
The good thing about Wahiba Sands is there many roads that cross the desert. They are sandy roads, where you have to drive firmly so that the car does not get stuck. Many of these roads give huge dunes where locals test their cars and climb the most vertiginous, an experience that is best done only with experienced drivers.
A good introduction to the desert is to take the Bidiyah Camps Road. This way you go for a sand road where can you get out of it and have fun in the dunes, with the advantage that cars pass from time to time to the camps that are in this corner of the desert. In these camps you can spend the night, but we recommend camping in the desert, which is what most people do. Experience is experience, and the stars seen from a desert is something unique.
How to get?
The best way is to depart from Bidiyah and then from there to Al Raka to take the Bidiyah Camps Road. Take a GPS and a map, it is better not to get lost if you leave the main “road”.
Where to sleep?
We recommend camping in the desert for free, a legal and highly recommended activity. If you are looking for some more comfort we recommend camps such as:
- 1000 Nights Camp From € 95 per night
- Desert Wonders Camp From € 100 per night
