During the month of September we were analyzing what to see in Burgos during a weekend A city we had visited years ago and only to see its cathedral. But of course, Burgos is not only a cathedral nor a province full of charming monasteries. It is a province full of surprises such as the Atapuerca sites or the beautiful Sierra de Neila. However, our visit focused solely and exclusively on the city of Burgos, something that was already lacking.

What to see in Burgos during a weekend

To be honest we only had a day and a half to see the city. On Friday we were short because we arrived from Avila night and on Sunday we had to return soon after a copious meal. However we walked more than 20 kilometers to see the main monuments, many of them on top of a mountain and pushed with a car of twins ...

Our hotel was staying outside the center, right in an area where there is no blue zone in the east of the city. Although it seems that we were far away, Burgos is not a big city, everything can be reached on foot. In fact we were 20 minutes in a straight line along the Vitoria street. Another option would have been in the center, but many streets are cut and forced us to leave the car in a parking lot.

Once we have done our homework, we ask for a tourist map in the hotel. With this and the phone map we had closed our plan. The first thing was to walk straight to the Santa Maria Arch, which gives access to the Plaza del Rey San Fernando and the Burgos cathedral.

1 Santa Maria Arch

The Arch of Santa Maria is as beautiful as I had been told. It is adorned with famous people of the city and is considered as one of the 12 doors that gave access to the ancient city.

It is worth staying a while to admire the figures, but of course knowing what comes behind the arch is possible that we pass quickly.

2 Exterior of the cathedral of Burgos

We cross the arch and find this monumental cathedral of Gothic construction. So large that as we do not carry a wide angle, it will not go completely in our photographs

Before entering the cathedral, we say border it on its left side, until we reach the St. Nicholas church. Since we were carrying a baby carriage, climbing the stairs was quite a substitute.

But in the end we reach the Plaza Santa María and we delight in the front of the cathedral. The joy did not last long since in the church of San Nicolás they were celebrating a wedding and at the end of this they threw a traca that was heard all over Burgos. Long live the couple!

3 St. Nicholas Church

Since we were close and the wedding was over, we decided to enter the church of St. Nicholas. Simple in appearance but with an altarpiece / tomb of important dimensions. And I say grave because at his feet the relatives of Gonzalo Polanco, former merchants of Burgos, have been buried.

4 Interior of the Burgos Cathedral

We return to the main course of the day, the cathedral of Burgos. If it is incredible outside, inside it would not be less. In addition it is not one of those cathedrals that are seen in 30 minutes ... here we can spend hours stuck to the audio guide that is included with the entrance.

The start of the visit begins where the audio guides are delivered and pressing the number 1. We will begin to see various chapels with an impeccable finish and condition. Even so, I recommend you always see the ceilings, they are all magnificent and very varied, many of them with windows of more than 500 years.

An important point is the golden ladder, which was once used to enter the cathedral from the door of the Coronería. Since we are in special places within the cathedral of Burgos, we should not miss the Cruise Dome, and just below this is the tomb of Cid and Doña Jimena.

It is perfectly possible to be hours and hours inside the cathedral of Burgos. Not only if we follow the indicated points at a low table, it is that one can easily sit on a bench and observe infinite small details.

Already in the final section, we will visit the two cloisters, one of them covered with glass and another open to the public. Around these, of course, there are several rooms and exhibitions with more interesting things.

5 St. Stephen's Church

From the cathedral of Burgos, we climb an infinity of stairs to reach the slopes of the mountain where the church of San Esteban is located and above the castle of Burgos. Inside it is the Altarpiece museum and is accessible with the tourist bracelet.

The church is stripped of all the banks to facilitate the transit between all the altarpieces and different religious pieces, located both in the main nave and on the upper floor.

6 Burgos Castle

The castle of Burgos is from my point of view unattractive, although it has a really high historical value. Even so, the best thing is the magnificent views of the city, both from here and from a viewpoint below.

The castle is a little hidden on top of the mountain and completely bordered by trees. There are hardly any walls and underground galleries that are visited at certain times with the help of a guide and dressed in a helmet and a flashlight.

7 Main Square of Burgos

As in many cities in Spain, one of the main squares is the main square. Important center of Burgos and where there are many tapas bars.

8 Burgos Wall

In different parts of the city we can see remains of the old wall that once bordered Burgos. Perhaps the point where it is best observed is on the street Alvar Fáñez.

9 Captaincy General

A very interesting building is that of the general captaincy and headquarters of the military history museum. I can't comment on the museum because I didn't have the opportunity to enter, but I do remember the tapas I tasted in the same square.

10 Parish of San Gil Abad

Another church we visited was that of San Gil, also included in the tourist bracelet. It consists of seven dedicated chapels, some dedicated to families and others for purely religious reasons.

If I remember correctly, it has a schedule from 10-14h / 16-19h, except for Sundays that opens from 5pm to 8pm.

11 Museum of human evolution

Something I will have to visit the next time I go to Burgos is without a doubt Atapuerca and the museum of human evolution, where many of the findings found reside.

12 Strike Monastery

One of the jewels of the crown of Burgos is the monastery of Las Huelgas, a must see. It has a cost of 6€ and the visit is strictly guided and photographs are not allowed inside. Your exterior may not say anything, but what is inside is really incredible. Altarpieces, works of art, tombs of kings, ..., etc.

For example there rest the remains of Alfonso VIII of Castile, Enrique I de Castilla, Leonor de Castilla (Queen of Aragon), among many others. There is also a collection of paintings and medieval fabrics of great importance.

Practical data

Burgos tourist bracelet

With a price of 8€ gives you access to the cathedral of Burgos, the church of San Nicolás, the church of San Esteban and the church of San Gil. If we were separately it would cost us almost € 15. This is acquired in the same cathedral and is valid to enter all places as long as the bracelet does not fall from your wrist.

When to go to Burgos

Any time of the year is good although it is true that the winters are cold and sometimes a heavy snow falls. Perfect time to see the city with a different point of view.

Where to sleep in Burgos

Parking in the center of Burgos is not easy and if we do not leave the car on the other side of the river we will have no choice but to put it in a parking lot. That is why many times we look for options outside the center, which in any case we will not have to walk more than 20 minutes. Burgos is not that big.

  • Puerta de Burgos Hotel: our choice and 15 minutes from downtown with easy parking. Free Wi-Fi and a 4-star hotel with a 3-star price.
  • Bulevar Burgos Hotel: 10 minutes from downtown, modern and with good breakfast.
  • Hotel Mesón del Cid: right in the center, with its own quality restaurant and with exquisite views of the cathedral.
