Today we are pleased to present you the route to the Mogota del Cervunal orCabeza Nevada in the Sierra de Gredos. A mountain of 2426 meters of altitude that is not usually very frequented for its remoteness and especially for being in the same area as the monsters of the Galana and the Almanzor.

Route to the Mogota del Cervunal or Cabeza Nevada in the Sierra de Gredos

In the Sierra de Gredos we can find many routes. Some more frequented and others where we will hardly find a soul. An example is the route to the Mogota del Cervunal or Cabeza Nevada, where meeting large groups of people is unlikely. The reason is simple, it is a long route. However, it could be shortened by sleeping in the refuge of the large lagoon, but in most cases sleeping in the shelter is to undertake other peaks such as the Almanzor.

Mogota del Cervunal on the right

They are more than 20 kilometers of route in a linear route that starts from the Gredos platform, a parking near Holes of the Hawthorn Although it belongs to another location. It could be circulated, but we would have to add more kilometers and more unevenness of the almost 1400 meters What is in the normal route. Another option would be to undertake it from Navacepeda de Tormes, but the route would be too long to do it on a winter day.

Route to the Mogota del Cervunal or Cabeza Nevada from the Gredos platform

We start from the Gredos platform. Place where other great routes such as ElMorezón, La Mira or ElAlmanzor depart. Therefore it is not surprising that we find many cars if we arrive later than 10 in the morning.

Ahead we have 21 kilometers and 1396 meters of unevenness. Our goal is the Mogota del Cervunal 2426 meters high. A long day but very rewarding since we will pass through very beautiful places among which is the large lagoon of Gredos and its wonderful circus.

After leaving the Gredos platform, we take the only road that leaves at the end of the parking lot. It is a stony but well marked road, where we will start with a good zig-zag and where ice in winter usually abounds. Later we will arrive at the first sign indicating the direction to the Gredos lagoon, detour we must take if we do not want to end up in the port of Candeleda.

We follow the path and leave a detour to our right that goes to the Reguero Llano refuge. Later we will cross a river with a concrete bridge and from here we will begin to climb a mountain with about 300 meters of unevenness until we find a fountain and later with the barrerones and the lagoon viewpoint.

Almanzor

From the viewpoint we can see the Almanzor and to the right of the whole Mogota del Cervunal, mountain that you can see in the third photograph. Now it is time to go down to the large lagoon of Gredos, which is completely frozen in winter.

Instead of bordering it on the left, we must do it on the right after turning on a turnoff that marks the route of the 5 lagoons. This crossing is sometimes not easy to find.

After taking it, we cross the lagoon on its north side. We pass a river that descends from this and instead of continuing along the lagoon we take a path that goes just to the opposite side and begins to climb the mountain.

This path will take us very close to the feather canal, leaving this behind us and taking south direction to another valley where in the end we will again see the Mogota del Cervunal, not before without climbing about 100 meters of slope to later lose them again.

From above we see our objective and we get an idea where we should go down. In fact there is some trace which my partner begins to take.

Route to the Mogota del Cervunal in the Sierra de Gredos

I start down again to a new valley cut in two by a stream. We crossed this and followed the path that would take us to the 5 lagoons but that halfway we will have to divert. The detour is not very well signposted but to get an idea it is just when the slope of the Mogota del Cervunal goes from having piornos and another kind of bushes to being very very rocky.

Now we will try to follow some milestones that in most cases end up being lost. Now it is simply to go up and up until you reach the top of the Mogota del Cervunal.

As the slope is strong, surely we will make many stops and take the opportunity to take the occasional photograph. To think that the top of the mountain will not be seen until the last second.

In the last meters, depending on the face we take, it is possible to see at the bottom of the 5 lagoons of Gredos. Frozen throughout the winter and located in a very inhospitable place.

Nevada Head Summit

In the end we will reach the top, crowned by a lot of stones and with privileged views. Now we just have to discuss whether to return along the same path or undertake a circular route to the platform. Everything will depend on the time you have left for nightfall.
