South of Turkey, very close to the Mediterranean Sea, is located Aspendos, the TheaterGreco-Roman Best preserved in the world. With the capacity to host up to 15,000 spectators, it has nothing to envy Coliseum deRoma, as clear aspect. It was built in the period of Marco Aurelio around A.D. 155 by the Greek architect Zenon and as you can see in the photographs its appearance is impressive.
Aspendos, the best preserved theater in the world
Aspendos it is 750km from Istanbul and it is a mandatory stopping place for all those who travel Turkey for free. While it is true that many of the Cruises that dock on the Turkish Coast, offer guided tours of the archaeological complex.
Not everything in Aspendos is summarized in a Greco-Roman Theater. In its surroundings we can find a Stadium in quite bad condition, a Aqueduct and an old Acropolis located at the top of the skirt of the mountain where Aspendos is located, so the views of the Theater are magnificent.

When we arrived at the theater, he was prepared to house plays, Opera and Concerts Keep in mind that during the summer nights, mainly in the month of June / July, various cultural activities are held, in addition to light and sound shows. There were not many people, but from time to time Organized Tours arrive.
To protect you from the sun, there is a corridor at the top of the Theater that borders it completely. As it provided shade all day it was very cool 😀.
Leaving the Theater there is a marked path that leads to the Acropolis. This road can be a martyrdom if you travel it in summer, since we have neither water nor shade along the way. There you will find a building called the Basilica.
After a couple of hours touring the archaeological site, we decided to set course for our next destination yet to be decided, Perge or theMount Olympus.
When to go?
We can visit Aspendos at any time of the year, but Spring and the month of September are the best dates to visit it. In summer it is very hot, so I recommend hitting a good early morning or go to enjoy one of their Operas In the month of June.
How to get?
It is located near the town of Serik, in southern Turkey. We can arrive by rental car, organized trip, by Taxi from Antalya or Serik and even taking one of the minibuses that go to Manavgat from nearby towns, stopping at a crossroads located 4km from the Theater. From here we can take a taxi.
What to wear
Water, some food and desire to walk in the sun. The tour is very short, and most of the time you will spend it in the theater. There is nothing else to do in several kilometers around.
Where to sleep?
Most people stay in Antalya due to the large number of establishments found there.
Some of the Hotels we can find in Antalya:
- Pearl Villa
- Ozmen Pansiyon
- Minyon Hotel
